Flextronics Announces Job Cuts, Plant Shutdowns
March 12, 2009
Singapore-based EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) provider Flextronics announced on March 10 a number of restructuring plans, including job cuts and facility shutdowns, Reuters reported. The scale of workforce reduction has not yet been revealed, but the company expects to record pretax restructuring costs of US$220 million to US$250 million in fiscal years 2009 and 2010, a significant portion of which will cover employee benefits and severance arrangements. However, Flextronics projects that through the restructuring the company will be able to generate cash savings of $230 million to $260 million annually. Although the locations of plants to be shuttered have not been announced, Flextronics plans to relocate its manufacturing operations to less costly sites. Last week, according to another Reuters report, Flextronics is due to shut down an assembly plant in Shah Alam, Malaysia, and lay off 1,382 workers by the end of March.
